Journalism is a competitive industry, both among colleagues and news agencies. Other news agencies compete for exclusivity and audiences, and journalists in the same newsroom compete for precious headline space that catches the reader's attention. Standing out in the crowd often comes down to a strong peg, which can help an editor prioritize one story over another. There are some easy pegs to hook a reader, like sensational stories, but an article doesn't have to tell a harrowing story to be compelling. Some of the most exceptional stories weave together personal details with larger issues.
